Weekly Announcements – 08/06/2017

  1. Holy Qurbana– On Monday, August 14th evening we will have Holy Qurbana for the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Evening prayer will begin at 6:30pm.
  2. Weekly Fasting Prayer– Our weekly fasting prayer will be held this Friday from 10am-
    12PM at the home of Dr. Thomas Mathew and Mrs. Smitha Mathew. All are kindly requested to attend.
  3. Parish General Body Meeting– Our Parish General Body meeting will be held on Sunday August 20th after service. All eligible members are requested to attend.
  4. Area Martura Conference– Our parish will be hosting this year’s MGOCSM Area Martura Conference which will be held on this Friday, August 11th- Saturday August 12th from 9am-5pm. The theme for the conference is “What is Christian Legacy” and “What are the steps in leaving our legacy”. The speakers for the conference will be Rev. Fr. Alexander Kurian and Rev. Dn. Abu Koshy. All MGOCSM members are requested to attend. Information on how to register online is posted on the Flyer which will be posted on the parish website.
  5. Parish OVBS– Our parish will be hosting a one-day OVBS on Saturday, August 26th from 9am – 7pm. Reach out to either Mrs. Giby Jacob or Ms. Shilpa Mathew to register. The deadline for the registration will be tomorrow, Monday July 31st . There will be a $5 charge for each student signing up. Kindly see Mr. Nevin Joseph for more details.

Weekly Announcements – 07/31/2017

  1. Fast of the Dormition– This Tuesday, August 1st , we are starting the Lent of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
  2. Holy Qurbana– On Monday, August 14th evening we will have Holy Qurbana for the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Evening prayer will begin at 6:30pm.

Weekly Announcements – 07/23/2017

1. Weekly Fasting Prayer– Our weekly fasting prayer will be held this Friday from 10am-12pm at the parish. All are kindly requested to attend.

2. Parish Picnic– Our Parish Summer Picnic was held yesterday. Special thanks to all the volunteers, especially the youth who helped out.

3. MGOCSM Meeting– Our next MGOCSM Meeting will be held this Saturday, July 29th at 4pm here at the Church. All MGOCSM Members are requested to attend.

4. Parish OVBS– Our parish will be hosting a one day OVBS on Saturday, August 26th from 9am – 7pm. If you are interested in signup for registration will begins today. Reach out to either Mrs. Giby Jacob or Ms. Shilpa Mathew for registration. The deadline for the registration will be Monday July 31 st . The Theme for the Conference is “Be Perfect as your heavenly father is perfect” There will be a $5 charge for each student signing up. Kindly see Mr. Nevin Joseph for more details.

Weekly Announcements – 07/09/2017

  1. Parish Perunal – We celebrated our Parish Perunal for this this past Friday and Saturday. We want to thank all those who made arrangements to attend and all the volunteers who helped out, please see 2017 St. Thomas Perunal Album for pictures from the Rasa.
  2. Weekly Fasting Prayer– Our weekly fasting prayer will be held this Friday from 10am-Noon at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Vinod and Mibby Abraham. All are requested to attend.
  3. Parish Picnic– Our Parish Summer Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at Belmont State Park at Bethpage.
  4. MGOCSM Meeting– Our next MGOCSM meeting will be held on Saturday, July 29th at 4pm here at the Church. All MGOCSM Members are requested to attend.
  5. The Marth Mariam Vanitha Samajam – of our area are planning a trip to Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary and Monastery in Jordanville, NY on Wednesday, August 16th. Those who are interested to attending this trip kindly provide your names to Mary Varghese or Sandhya Thomas as soon as possible.
  6. Sunday School Family Outing– The Sunday School is arranging a family outing to go and see the Long Island Ducks Baseball game. It will be held on Friday, August 18th at 6:30pm. We have reserved tickets and if you are interested in attending kindly let Mr. Ajit Thomas know as soon as possible. Just a friendly reminder that parents are responsible for arranging rides and supervising their children.

  8. Open Office Hours at the Diocesan Chancery -The first of such office hours will be on Tuesday July 11th at our Diocesan Chancery, 2158 Route 106, Muttontown, New York. The open office hours are from 9AM to 12PM and 3PM to 6PM.
  9. His Holiness the Catholicos –His Holiness the Catholicos will be arriving to NY this Wednesday. Let us pray for His safe arrival.

Weekly Announcements – 06/25/2017

  1. Anil John Memorial Basketball Tournament – A friendly reminder that July 1st Saturday is the annual basketball tournament at Island Garden Gym. Kindly make arrangements to attend to show your support.
  2. Fasting Prayer – Our weekly fasting prayer will be held at the Church from 10am-Noon. All are requested to attend.
  3. Service Next Week – Kindly note the time change for service for next Sunday. Morning prayer will begin at 7:30am because of a baptism which will be held right after morning prayer.
  4. Parish Perunal – A reminder that our Parish Perunal will be held on July 7th and 8th Friday and Saturday. As our guest speaker we will have Rev. Fr. Paulose Peter, the Vicar of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, White Plains, NY.

Weekly Announcements – 05/14/2017

  1. The Passing of Kevin Mathew ­– It is with great sadness that we wish to inform you of the passing of Kevin Mathew. He is survived by his parents Mr. Abraham O. Mathew & Mrs. Suja Mathew, and siblings Julia Mathew and Jason Mathew.
  2. MMVS Parent and Couples Conference – will be held on Saturday, May 27th at St. Stephens Midland Park Church in NJ. Please contact the Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam Secretary Mary Varghese or Treasurer Sandya Thomas for more details. Please see the flyer below for more details.
  3. Feast of the Ascension – We will be celebrating the Feast of Ascension of our Lord on Wednesday, May 24th at 6:30pm. H.G. Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, our Diocesan Metropolitan will be the main celebrant. All are requested to attend.
  4. FOCUS Trip – FOCUS is planning a trip to St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Seminary on Monday, May 29th. FOCUS members and whoever are interested in attending kindly inform Sunil George or Alex Abraham at your earliest convenience.
  5. MGOCSM Meeting – There will be a MGOCSM meeting this Saturday at 4pm at the Church. Valiyachen will be leading the meeting. All MGOCSM members are requested to attend.
  6. New Holy Qurbana Books – New Holy Qurbana books are ready for release. Pre-order forms are sent out to the parish. Each book costs $15.     • June 4th is the Centralized Exam for the 12th grade
    • June 25TH is Centralized Exam for 5th, 8th, 12th and TTC
    • Church Assigned competitions will be held on June 18th, Details have been mailed out and also posted on Sunday School bulletin board.
    • Regional OVBS is July 5,6,7 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Queens Village.  Please see Principal or Vice principal for more information.
    • Sunday school final is June 11th.

Weekly Announcements – 02/19/2017

  1. Sunday School Education Day – Yesterday we had our Sunday School Education Day led by the MGOCSM of our parish. I want to thank the youth for taking the initiative for organizing the program for the day.
  1. MGOCSM Meeting – Our next MGOCSM meeting will be held this Friday, February 24th at 6pm at the residence of Dr. Thomas Mathew and Mrs. Smitha Mathew. All MGOCSM members are requested to attend.
  1. Great Lent – Just a friendly reminder that Great Lent begins next Monday, February 27th. If you would like to setup a time for confession kindly contact Valiya Achen or Abey Achen as soon as possible.
  1. Lenten Evening Prayer – We will be having Lenten evening prayer every Wednesday during Great lent at 6:30pm beginning Wednesday, March 1st. All are requested to attend.
  1. March Monthly Prayer Meeting – The monthly prayer meeting for March will be held on March 5th at Vailya Achen’s house.

Sunday School Education Day

On February 18th, the MGOCSM and Sunday School held our first Education Day for the Sunday School kids of our parish. The theme of the event was from Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength.” We started the day with prayer, followed by a general session led by Shojil Abraham. Shojil helped the kids of our Sunday School better understand the theme by showing them a presentation and giving them examples of how God gives us strength. He also spoke about the importance of the grace of God and how to receive it.

After the general session, we sang songs with the kids and broke into different groups to talk further about the theme. Each group was led by our Sunday School teachers who prepared a lesson plan for their classes. The teachers emphasized the grace of God working in our lives and how he provides us strength. They also created fun theme related activities for the kids to take part in.

We would like to thank both our Achens for their guidance and presence during this event. Thank you to all our MGOCSM youth and Sunday School teachers who made this event a fun and successful day for our kids.

Weekly Announcements – 02/12/2017

  1. All Departed Faithful – Next Sunday is when we remember all the departed faithful. Kindly submit the names of your loved ones by Saturday evening.
  2. March Monthly Prayer Meeting – The monthly prayer meeting for March will be held on March 5th at Vailya Achen’s house.
  3. Basketball Tournament Meeting – on February 26th there will STYL Basketball Tournament meeting after Sunday School. All youth are requested to attend this meeting
  4. FOCUS Meeting – Our next FOCUS meeting will be held on Friday, February 17th at 7pm at the residence of Deepu and Leena Palakaddan. All FOCUS members are requested to attend.
  5. Altar Servers Meeting – will be held on Sunday February 19th after Sunday School. All Altar Servers are requested to attend.
  6. MGOCSM Meeting – Our next MGOCSM meeting will be held on Friday, February 24th at 6pm. It will be held at the residence Dr. Thomas Mathew and Mrs. Smitha Mathew. All MGOCSM members are requested to attend.
  7. New Hand Dryers –  New environmentally friendly air hand dryers will be installed in the bathrooms, if anyone wishes to sponsor them please reach out the Secretary or Treasurer.
  8. 2016 Accounts Finalization – Please finalize all 2016 accounts over the next 2 weeks, as accounts will be closed for 2016 on Feb 26th, 2017.
  9. 2016 Sunday School Newsletter – please find the Sunday School Newsletter for 2016.  It shows the various service events and activities that our Sunday School did over the 2016 school year.

St. Bernard’s welcomes St. Thomas

 On Sunday afternoon, January 29th, the St. Thomas Long Island parish community visited St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church located in Levittown, NY. The Assistant Vicar, Reverend Father Abraham (Abey) George, along with many faithful were welcomed by the priest of St. Bernard’s, Father Ralph Sommer, along with many of the members of the parish.

The afternoon began with a welcome hymn, followed by Father Ralph addressing the guests on the history and the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. Few of the administrators of the church introduced themselves and explained at what capacity they each served within the parish. The address was followed by a question and answer session where both priests answered questions regarding their respective ecclesiastical traditions. Father Ralph displayed and explained the use of various holy oils used in various sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. The afternoon came to an end with a closings hymn followed by our parish chanting an intercessory hymn to St. Mary, the Mother of God, in Malayalam. After a group photo, Father Ralph invited us for coffee and refreshments where we had the opportunity to meet and interact with the members of the parish.

On behalf of the Clergy and the parishioners of St. Thomas, Long Island, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Father Ralph Sommer and the administration of St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church who organized this event. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all the parishioners for their hospitality and for everyone who welcomed us into their community. We look forward to working with St. Bernard’s family on various levels for the benefit of the Levittown community we serve.
