Weekly Announcements – 9/4/16

  1. Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Festival – Yesterday, The Youth of our parish attended the parish festival of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church of East Meadow. Special thanks to all those who participated.
  1. Back to School – Today we will have a “Back to School Session” for all Sunday school and Youth members of the parish who will be going back to School. Right after refreshments, kindly make your way back to the church.
  1. Sunday School Photo – Right after the general Session, we will be taking a Photo with the Sunday school students and teachers.
  1. Sunday School News:
    • After the General Session there will be meeting with the Sunday school teachers for the upcoming academic year. All Sunday school teachers are requested to attend the meeting.
    • September 11th and 18th will be Sunday School competitions
    • Sunday School classes will officially begin on the 25th
    • We am pleased to announce that our very own Sarah Solomon won 2nd place in the area for the assigned competition for drawing.
    • Regional Sunday School Competitions will be held at our parish on Oct 1st. We need parents and teachers to help out for the day.
    • Both the floors will be utilized for the competitions. We have to make sure we provide the help they need.
    • We need people to arrange with food, setting up the sound systems, and setting up chairs and tables, setting up areas for different competitions.
  1. MMVS News:
    • Saturday, October 15th is the MMVS Annual Conference. It will be held at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, Unruh Ave, Philadelphia.
    • There is only one bus arranged to go from Cherry Lane church. Only 50 people can go, from the 10 churches within our area. Seats will be available on a first come, first serve basis. The bus cost is $28/person ; and $15 for registration for the conference will be collected in advance. We have to give the payment as soon as possible. Today Mrs. Usha Sam, will collect the money.
    • Our parish MMVS Bible study will be held on Sunday, September 25th, after refreshments.
  1. MGOCSM Back To School Retreat – This year’s MGOCSM Back To School Retreat will be held on Saturday September 17th from 10am-4pm at St. John’s Orthodox Church, Orangeburg.
    • The main speaker will be Jinu P. Mathew, an assistant principal of Comsewogue School District, who will be speaking on the theme “Come & Rest” taken from St. Mathew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
    • There will be transportation leaving from St. Gregorios, Floral Park. The Cost: $10 per person. To reduce the overall cost of attending the retreat, the registration fee has been discounted to $5 per person.
  1. Altar Servers Meeting – will be held on Sunday, September 18th after refreshments.
  1. FOCUS Meeting – Our next FOCUS Meeting will be held on Friday, September 30th at 7pm. Location will be determined soon.
  1. Feast of the Holy Cross – On Tuesday, September 13th, we will be celebrating the feast of the Holy Cross. Evening prayer will begin at 6:30pm followed by Holy Qurbana.
  1. Next Week Service– Next Sunday, September 11th, Morning Prayer will begin at 8am.
  1. HH the Catholicose –  will be returning back to India tomorrow. Kindly uphold him in your prayers.

Lancaster Trip – Samson

We wanted to thank everyone that came on our summer trip to Sight & Sound Theater to see the play of Samson. It was a great trip and an amazing experience. Special thanks to everyone who helped organize this event.

Weekly Annoucements – 8/21/16

1. Parish Souvenir – The Souvenir Photo Session will be held today after refreshments.

2. Lancaster Trip Schedule – We are having our Lancaster Trip to Sight & Sound Theater this Wednesday. The schedule for the trip is posted below:

  • 8:00 AM: Breakfast will be served in the auditorium of the Church
  • 8:30 AM: The bus will leave the Church to Lancaster, PA
  • 12:00PM: We will have lunch (individuals must pay for themselves)
  • 2:00PM: Arrive at the Theater
  • 2:45PM: Show Begins
  • 8:00PM: Arrive back in Levittown, NY

3. Sunday School Meeting – The meeting of both Achens with the Sunday school principal and teachers will be on Sunday, September 4th instead of Sunday, August 28th. All Sunday school teachers are requested to attend this meeting.

4. School Supply Charity – The Youth will be partnering with the “coalition for the homeless” in collecting school supplies for the children who live in shelters. A list of acceptable supply items will be posted in the auditorium bulletin board. Items will be collected only until next Sunday so that it may be distributed in a timely manner before school reopens.

5. Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Festival – Holy Trinity Orthodox Church of East Meadow is having their parish festival on Saturday, September 3rd from 10am-6pm. The MGOCSM of this parish has made this into a youth event that everyone will take part in. We will meet at the Church on September 3rd at 3:00pm. See attached flyer

6. Orthodox Convention – The Combined Orthodox Convention will be held Friday August 26th- Sunday August 28th at 6:30pm. See attached flyer

  • Some copies are left in the lobby area of the Church.
  • The Main Speaker: Rev. Fr. P.A. Philip.
  • His Holiness the Catholicose will be inaugurating the convention Friday Evening. Sunday school children are asked to be present Friday evening at 6pm to receive His Holiness.
  • The Dress code for the children will be as follows:
  • Boys: White shirt, black pants and red tie.
  • Girls: White Dress

7. Arrival of the Catholicos & Return of Our Diocesan Metropolitan – Our Diocesan Metropolitan will be returning back after attending the Holy Synod this Tuesday and HH the Catholicos will be arriving to New York this Thursday. Let us uphold them in our prayers for their safe arrival.

Weekly Announcements – 8/14/16

  1. Parish Souvenir – As the Souvenir for the Parish is being worked on, we need pictures of the parish administration and of various spiritual organizations of the parish. The Souvenir Photo Session will be held next Sunday, August 21st after refreshments. All are requested to stay back. If you are still planning to give materials for the souvenir and still have not payed for the souvenir compliments, the deadline is next Sunday, August 21st.
  2. Softball Tournament Winners – Our STYL youth won 1st Place in the St. John’s Orthodox Church Summer Softball Tournament. Congratulations to the team!
  3. Lancaster Trip Schedule –  Please see the schedule for the trip below.
    • For those attending the Lancaster trip, we will be meeting at the Church  at 8am on August 24th for breakfast .
    • The bus will leave from the church by 8:30am.
    • We will stop for lunch (individuals must pay for themselves) and arrive at the theater by 2pm.
    • We hope to return back to the church by 8pm.
    • If you have not submitted the payment for the trip kindly do so as soon as possible to either Shojil Abraham or Danniya Samuel. It would be nice if we can all wear our church t-shirts for the trip.
  4. Parish T-shirts – Our parish t-shirts will be sold today and next week after service in the auditorium. They will be $10 each.

FOCUS Meeting – 8/12/16

Thank you everyone who came to the monthly FOCUS Meeting. At this month’s meeting we screened a movie, Contact. The movie discussed the pursuit of truth and how both science and religion are on the same path for truth but use different methods. Special thanks to Sunil & Amy George for hosting the meeting.

Weekly Announcements – 8/7/16

  1. Amminitykutty Kochamma – (Wife of KK. John Achen, and Mother of Geevarghese John Achen) passed away on Thursday, August 4th, 2016. Kindly keep her and the bereaving family in your prayers. The wake will be today from 4:30pm-9pm. Funeral services will be tomorrow at 9am. Both  services will be held at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, 1009 Unruh Ave, Philadelphia, PA.
  2. FOCUS Meeting- will be held this Friday, August 12th at 7pm at the residence of Sunil and Amy. All FOCUS members are requested to attend.
  3. Lancaster Trip – money is due today. Kindly See Danniya Samuel or Shojil Abraham to submit your payment. Cash, check, and payment through Venmo will be accepted.
  4. Church T-shirts – are still available for $10. They will be sold today and next Sunday after service. 
  5. Souvenir Photo Session – As the souvenir for the Parish is being worked on, we need pictures of the parish administration and spiritual organizations. The souvenir photo session will be held on Sunday, August 21st. All are requested to stay back after service.
  6. Materials for the Souvenir – Drawings, reflections about the Parish, and articles can be reviewed by us if you need our suggestions before publishing it in the souvenir.
  7. Fifteen Day Lent – Lent of the falling asleep of the Mother of God continues on. Let us take this time to do Holy Confession, spend time reading scripture, and abstaining from certain types of food. Confession will be available by appointment.

St. John’s Softball League 1st Place Winners

The MGOCSM and FOCUS of St. Thomas Orthodox Church, LI won 1st place yesterday in the St. John’s  Orthodox Church Summer Softball League. Our team was able to defend last year’s title, even after a very tough regular season.  We would like to thank our sister parish St. John’s Orthodox Church, Rockland   for giving us this great opportunity to take part in this league. A special thanks to all of our fans who attended the games and encouraged our team throughout the day.

Weekly Announcments – 7/31/16

  1. Church Picnic – The annual picnic was held yesterday at Belmont State Park. We wanted to thank everyone that participated and all the people that helped to coordinate the activities and food preparation.
  2. FOCUS Meeting – The next FOCUS Meeting will be held on August 12th at the residence of Sunil & Amy.
  3. MGOCSM Faith Study  – The next sesion in the series will be held on August 6th from 4pm-6pm at Church.
  4. Lancaster Trip Payments – The payments for the Lancaster trip are due by next Sunday, August 7th. Danniya & Shojil will be collecting payments. Please make checks payable to St. Thomas Orthodox Church, LI.
  5. Church T-Shirts– We will continue Church T-Shirt sales next Sunday after Kymuth. Please see Danniya or Shojil.
  6. Altar Servers Training – There will be an Altar Servers training session this coming Sunday, August 7th, after service.

2016 Parish Open House

We wanted to thank everyone that attended our first ever Parish Open House. Special thanks to all our neighbors and nearby churches that came to visit our parish. It was a great success. We hope that we can work together to achieve many things that need attention in our community. Thank you to both our Vicar and Assistant Vicar for their presence & guidance throughout the planning. We also wanted to thank our parish, MGOCSM, and FOCUS members who volunteered throughout the day. Our doors are always open to anyone who would like to visit our parish, attend liturgy, take part in our bible studies, and events. Please see our Photo Gallery for more images from the day.

  1. Parish Open – House will be held today from 2pm-6pm.
  2. Choir Practice – Wedding Songs Choir Practice July 24th, Sunday Evening at 7:30pm

  9. FYC 2016 – Last week we had our Family and Youth Conference at Ellenville NY. Special thanks to all those who participated.
  10. Holy Transfiguration Retreat Center – The North-East Diocese has agreed to purchase the a Retreat Center in Dalton Pennsylvania. (See Brochure Below for details)
